In my mid-twenties, I found myself avoiding a conversation with my roommate. I finally decided to bring up the issue when I realized I wasn't simply avoiding the conflict — I was avoiding her. She asked why I waited so long, which I thought was obvious: conflict. Then she said something I'll never forget: "If we don't have conflict, how will our relationship ever grow?"
Since then, I've seen this principle in action many times over. What we avoid with the best intentions not only exacerbates underlying challenges but also holds us back from reaping the benefits of working through those challenges.
